What happened before man was shot by police in Phoenix?

The incident began when officers responded to a stolen vehicle call near Fourth Avenue and Osborn Road around 6:45 p.m. and heard unrelated gunfire nearby, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

After a witness pointed officers in the direction of the gunfire, they found a man, identified later as Vasquez, standing next to a car that had a rifle on top of it.

Officers gave commands, but Vasquez allegedly grabbed the weapon, got into the car and drove off.

While officers pursued the car, Vasquez allegedly fired his gun while driving along neighborhood streets.

The chase ended just before 7 p.m. near 16th and Portland streets, just south of Interstate 10. Officer Jared Brown shot Vasquez while the car was being stopped, police said.
