Arizona State needed to win out and receive help in the form of losses by contenders to make it back to the Big 12 title game, and the help came to an extent on Saturday.
There are two simple scenarios that get the Sun Devils in, and it starts with beating Arizona in the Territorial Cup on Friday. Then, it all comes down to whether BYU can beat UCF at home on Saturday.
If BYU loses, ASU gets in with the win. If BYU wins, ASU needs Texas Tech (at West Virginia) and Utah (at Kansas) to both lose.
- Texas Tech (7-1)
- BYU (7-1)
- Utah (6-2)
- Arizona State (6-2)
- Arizona (5-3)
- Houston (5-3)
- Cincinnati (5-3)
- Iowa State (4-4)
- TCU (4-4)
- Kansas State (4-4)
- Baylor (3-5)
- Kansas (3-5)
- UCF (2-6)
- West Virginia (2-6)
- Colorado (1-7)
- Oklahoma State (0-8)
TCU provided one of the losses the Sun Devils needed elsewhere by beating Houston, 17-14. The Cougars had a 38-yard field goal with 46 seconds left to tie it, but Ethan Sanchez’s kick hooked left.
Kansas State was close to providing another needed Utah loss, but the Utes managed to come back and win, 51-47. This didn’t eliminate Arizona State, and neither would Utah winning out despite the head-to-head tiebreaker.
BYU then beat Cincinnati 26-14 at the same time as ASU taking care of Colorado.
