A VIA bus collided with a car in downtown San Antonio, sending one man to the hospital while sparking an ongoing investigation into the accident’s cause.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was taken to the hospital after a VIA bus collided with his vehicle in downtown San Antonio, according to police.

The crash happened at 600 North Frio Street around 6 a.m. Tuesday. Police say the driver of a silver car had stepped out of the vehicle after dropping off his wife, who works at Haven for Hope. SAPD Sgt. Frank Carrillo said the VIA bus struck the car while the man was outside of it.

He was taken to the hospital, but his condition and the extent of his injuries were not immediately known.

There were five people on the VIA bus at the time, including the driver. Sgt. Carrillo said all injuries on the bus were minor, and no one was transported to the hospital.

We reached out to VIA and they released this statement:

“This morning, a bus and private vehicle were in a collision near the intersection of Frio Street and Haven for Hope Way,” said Celine Dobbs, Manager of Strategic Communications & Programming with VIA Metropolitan Transit. “After making contact with the vehicle, the bus struck a tree and then came to rest against a building. The bus operator and the driver of the vehicle were transported to local medical facilities. There were passengers on the bus at the time of the collision. Some were being treated at the scene with minor injuries.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
