SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Health Department officials issued a rabies advisory Wednesday for residents during the Thanksgiving holiday, following the discovery of two additional foxes testing positive for the virus.
The animals, found within a 10-mile radius of three previously confirmed cases, mark the fourth and fifth rabid foxes identified this month and bring the total in Bexar County to 22 for 2025.
The foxes were reported on Nov. 20, one from the area around Mahogany Cove and the other from Smithson Valley Road. Both displayed irregular and aggressive behavior before being captured.
In response, the Bexar County Office of Emergency Management plans a large-scale volunteer effort next week, with teams going door to door to remind residents to ensure their pets’ rabies vaccinations are current.
Authorities continue to urge residents to avoid contact with wildlife or any unknown animals, particularly over the holiday weekend when outdoor activity increases. Encounters with strangely behaving animals should be reported immediately to local authorities. Pet owners are advised to confirm that their dogs and cats are up to date on vaccinations.
Residents who suspect their pets may have been exposed to rabies, or who have been bitten, are asked to contact local rabies authorities. Unincorporated county residents can reach Bexar County Animal Control at (210) 335-9000 or by email at bitereport@bexar.org
