Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran for mayor and lost to Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani in the 2025 New York City mayoral election, is now placing the blame on Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa for his loss.
That’s what the former governor told fellow former governor David Paterson on a WABC radio show this week.
Cuomo ran on independent lines after losing a Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani in an upset, despite being heavily favored to win.
Cuomo claims the general election would have been much different if it had been centered on just him and Mamdani.
But the numbers paint a different story — if Sliwa’s vote totals were added to Cuomo’s, along with other candidates on the ballot, it still would have fallen short of Zohran Mamdani’s vote totals.
President Trump’s administration reportedly encouraged incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa to drop out of the race in order to give Cuomo a shot.
