Weather continues impacting travel after Thanksgiving weekend

  • December 1, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Winter weather is continuing to have an impact on travelers across the country on the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend.

Winter storm warnings brought heavy snow to midwestern states Saturday and early Sunday, then shifted into southeastern Canada. More than 130 flight delays were reported at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Sunday also announced deicing events at several Great Lakes-area airports, a closure at Des Moines International and delays caused by snow at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The travel pains persisted on Monday, especially for people heading to areas like Chicago or New York, which have seen the heaviest weather impacts.

As of 6 a.m. on Monday, two flights to JFK Airport in New York from Phoenix were cancelled. Several other flights were facing delays. Travelers should keep an eye on updates from their airline about possible delays and cancellations.

The delays and cancellations come after the FAA’s projection that Sunday would rank among its busiest days in 15 years, with more than 51,000 flights scheduled nationwide, second only to Thanksgiving Day this year, which saw estimations of over 52,000 flights.

Travelers departing from Phoenix Sky Harbor are encouraged to use the PHX Sky Train, from the 24th Street or 44th Street stations, to speed up their departure, according to Heather Shelbrack, a spokesperson for Phoenix Sky Harbor.
