KEY LARGO, Fla. (CBS12) — Cooley the manatee was saved—again—after a fishing line entanglement nearly cost her a flipper.

The Dolphin Research Center led a multi-day rescue of the injured manatee with the help of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The Cooley the manatee was reportedly severely tangled in a fishing line, which injured her pectoral flipper.

DRC says the rescue took multiple days and hours of effort to safely free her. When she was untangled, Cooley was rushed to a veterinarian for treatment before being released back into the ocean.

The DRC is using Cooley’s story to highlight the recurring dangers improperly disposed of fishing lines pose to marine life.

“This isn’t just a one-time issue — it’s an ongoing and serious threat to manatees in our waters,” said Allie Proskovec, Public Relations Director, Dolphin Research Center. “When the same animals are needing rescue again and again, it shows how urgent it is for all of us to take better care of our environment.”

Cooley has already been rescued multiple times for being tangled, and her mother, Dually, has been rescued over a dozen times for the same hazard.

According to DRC, entanglements are one of the most common and preventable dangers to manatees.

The research center urges anglers to properly recycle fishing lines and report injured wildlife to FWC by calling 1-888-404-3922.
