Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas will host a free shoe distribution from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 10 at Community Health Development Inc.’s 115 N. Ham Lane site.

The event will provide 1,000 new pairs of athletic shoes to Uvalde children. The giveaway is open to all school-aged children who live in Uvalde, not just those enrolled in Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District. Shoes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

The effort is a collaboration between Big Brothers Big Sisters, a youth mentorship nonprofit; Centene Corporation, a national health care enterprise; and Shoes That Fit, a nonprofit that provides new shoes to children in need.

JJ Suarez with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Uvalde said the 2025 national match of the year from Indiana, who have been together 10 years since the child was in second grade, will attend the event. The duo, a grandmother of 12 and a child who experienced many trying circumstances, help inspire others through their story.
