METRO said a mechanic was operating the bus for a routine test when a pedestrian walked into the roadway in front of the bus.

HOUSTON — A person has died after they were hit by a bus in southwest Houston early Friday morning, according to Houston METRO.

The crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. on N Holmes Road near Hiram Clarke Road.

METRO said a mechanic was operating the bus for a routine test when a pedestrian walked into the roadway in front of the bus.

“The operator was unable to stop in time, and contact was made, resulting in damage to the bus window,” METRO said in a statement. 

The pedestrian was rushed to a hospital where they later died.

METRO Police are investigating the crash.

METRO issued the following statement prior to the pedestrian’s death:

“During a routine test, a Metro bus operated by a Hiram Clarke mechanic was involved in a collision with a pedestrian near the Burnett Operations facility. Preliminary information indicates the bus was traveling westbound under the bridge when an individual entered the roadway in front of the vehicle. The operator was unable to stop in time, and contact was made, resulting in damage to the bus windshield. The pedestrian was transported with life-threatening injuries. Metro police are investigating the incident.”
