Car raffle is Dec. 15

 NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Friends of the Homeless will hold a a car raffle at noon Dec. 15, for a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Friends website or at the shelter, 211 E. High Ave. Proceeds will support the general operating expenses of the organization.

Local organizations receive funding

COLUMBUS − Two organizations that serve Tuscarawas County will receive state funding through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio will receive up to $50,000 in each of the next two fiscal years to help provide mentorship programs to eligible children in Tuscarawas, Carroll, and Harrison counties. Additionally, Marion Goodwill Industries will received up to $390,000 to provide workforce development training to eligible children in Tuscarawas and 27 other counties.

Learn about supporting local agriculture

DOVER − Mark McKenzie will speak about the mission and history of the Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market at 12:15 p.m. Dec. 18, at the Senior Center. Program to share Warther brothers’ adventures

DOVER − Local storyteller Chris Hart will portray Fred Warther, the older brother of Ernest “Mooney” Warther, 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16, at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St. The program will highlight the adventures shared by the Warther siblings and tell the stories behind Mooney’s greatest works. Winter solstice hike at Atwood Lake Park

MINERAL CITY − A winter solstice hike will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 21, at Atwood Lake Park, 9500 Lakeview Road. Participants can take a 2-mile self-guided hike along the Woodland Trail and bridge by the light of many luminarias and candles. Refreshments and crafts will be offered in the activity center. Timber available from county road department

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas County Road and Bridge Department will soon trim and cut roadside trees and is updating its list of residents who want to have firewood left at their properties. The wood will not be cut to firewood lengths, but it will be large random lengths that fit in the county’s tandem dump trucks. Cost is $75 per load. Power of Perspective advocates for those with developmental disabilities.

 NEW PHILADELPHIA − Jordyn Zimmerman and the Chris Nikic Team will offer their journeys and insights during an open event to promote advocacy for people with developmental disabilities. The Power of Perspective will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 16, at the Kent State University Performing Arts Center and is hosted by the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Doors open at 9 a.m. with Zimmerman speaking from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by lunch. The Chris Nikic Team presentation is 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. followed by speaker Nate Kamban.
