Snowiest cities in America: Western New York reigns
Explore why Western New York cities like Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo are among the snowiest in America, thanks to the powerful lake-effect snow phenomenon.
Multiple Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across western and central New York as lake-effect snow impacts travel through Monday and into early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
Western New York
A winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, and Erie counties, including Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Batavia, Warsaw, Orchard Park and Springville.
Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of lake-effect snow in the most persistent bands, with the heaviest snowfall likely in the Buffalo metro area, southern Erie County, southern Niagara County, southwest Orleans County, and western Wyoming County. Snow-covered and slippery roads with reduced visibility are expected, especially during the Monday evening commute.
Wayne County
A separate winter weather advisory remains in effect for Wayne County until 1 p.m. Monday. An additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible, with the greatest accumulation expected in the northeast corner of the county. Slippery roads may impact the Monday morning commute.
Central New York
In Southern Cayuga County, a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday, with up to 1 inch of additional snow expected.
Meanwhile, an advisory for Onondaga County, including Syracuse, has been extended until 1 p.m. Monday. Forecasters call for 1 to 3 inches of snow, with higher totals possible in the northwestern part of the county.
Travel Impacts
Lake-effect snow is expected to fall in narrow, intense bands, leading to rapidly changing road conditions and visibility. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time and use caution. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511.
