Texas Academy of Biomedical Sciences High School senior Oluwadamilola Adebiyi is officially headed to Rice University on a full-ride scholarship. Through the QuestBridge National College Match, she earned a scholarship that covers tuition, fees, room, board and travel expenses, according to a district press release.
At Rice, she plans to study biosciences with a concentration in biochemistry, a field she fell in love with through AP Biology and her involvement in HOSA – Future Health Professionals at TABS. These experiences helped her discover what it truly means to serve others through medicine and gave her a strong foundation for the future she hopes to build, the release said.
Her dream of becoming a surgeon, or another operating-room specialist, comes from her childhood in Nigeria, where she witnessed the effects of healthcare inequality firsthand, especially for women. She hopes to use her education to support communities that lack access to high-quality care, both here in the U.S. and abroad.
Oluwadamilola is also excited to join Rice’s collaborative, supportive community. She’s deeply grateful for those who helped her along the way, giving special shoutouts to her teacher, Evette Mumford, who nurtured her interest in medicine through HOSA, and her dad, who has continuously supported her goals and encouraged her every step of the journey.
