High winds knocked out power for thousands of Nova Scotia Power customers on Friday night.
As of 9:55 p.m., the utility’s outage map showed more than 54,000 affected customers. There are outages throughout the province.
The power utility activated its emergency operations centre at noon, anticipating outages from the stormy weather.
According to a news release from Nova Scotia Power, its emergency centre is a place to coordinate outage restorations and response.
But the utility warned high winds of 80 km/h or more could delay efforts to restore power, because it may not be safe for Nova Scotia Power crews to conduct work in a raised bucket truck.
CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said winds were expected to reach 100 km/h in many parts of the province.
