New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani endorsed Diana Moreno Saturday in the campaign to fill his seat in the New York State Assembly.
“I can’t imagine anyone more capable of carrying our movement forward than Diana, who has fought tirelessly for union workers, immigrant communities, and our neighbors across this district. Diana has my full support,” Mamdani said as he backed Moreno, who like Mamdani considers herself to be a democratic socialist.
In a campaign posting on social media, Moreno has said she is running “to deliver on (Mamdani’s) affordability agenda and fight the rising tide of fascism.”
Moreno faces three challengers in the race, which will be decided in a special election, likely taking place on Feb. 3: Mary Jobaida, Rana Abdelhamid and Shivani Dhir.
Mamdani takes office as mayor on New Year’s Day.
