PHOENIX — An investigation is underway after a body was found in a west Phoenix canal on Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to the area of 36th and Whitton avenues for reports of a body in the canal around 10:19 a.m.

The Phoenix Fire Department also responded and determined that the individual was dead.

Police said that crews were still on scene around noon removing the body from the canal.

The identity of the person was not released.

According to police, the investigation into how the individual died and ended up in the west Phoenix canal is underway.
