City of Phoenix officials are in a holding pattern in their decision on how and if light rail will be extended to the State Capitol Mall.

A four-member council subcommittee effectively punted a decision regarding the Valley Metro Capitol Light Rail Extension line to a Jan. 27 meeting of the full nine-member city council.

The Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning Subcommittee voted 3-0 on Wednesday to have staff explore routes that would take light rail into West Phoenix other than the ones already studied that would pass directly next to or near the State Capitol Mall.
