PHOENIX — One present that Valley drivers can be thankful for over the Christmas weekend is no scheduled freeway closures.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said it and its contractors are not planning any closures to state highways for construction projects, instead encouraging motorists to focus on driving safely.

Although, those traveling near downtown Phoenix should be aware of traffic due to the Rate Bowl at Chase Field, which is expected to end around 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tips for traveling over Christmas weekend with no freeway closures

Even though there are no closures scheduled, the traffic authority said that motorists should expect the unexpected and allow for extra time when traveling over the holiday weekend due to possible unscheduled restrictions from crashes and other incidents.

In order to be prepared, ADOT recommended checking weather conditions before embarking on a trip as well as being ready for any possible inclement weather.

It provided a list of items to throw in an emergency prep kit, including extra drinking water, snacks, flashlights, blankets, warm clothing and a first-aid kit. It also suggested bringing a cellphone charger and any prescription medication in case of an unscheduled closures.

In addition, it advised that Arizonans check their vehicle’s tire pressure, engine belts, hoses, fluid levels and windshield wipers.

Due to how busy the holidays are, ADOT also urged drivers to make sure they are well rested before getting behind the wheel.

Finally, if any holiday festivities include alcoholic beverages, ensure that a designated driver has been assigned.
