The holidays are the season of gift giving, and with that often comes making a few returns.

You might want to think twice this year as more stores are charging fees for returns this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

NRF estimates that 72% of stores are charging returns fees, compared to 66% last year.

Here’s a look at some stores that are charging return fees:

  • Zara: $4.95
  • J.Crew $7.50
  • JCPenney: $8
  • H&M: $3.99
  • Macy’s: $9.99
  • T.J. Maxx/Marshalls: $11.99
  • Best Buy: 15% of item purchase price or $45 restocking fee for specific items

Most stores only charge fees for shipped returns, though some — like Best Buy — charge fees for items regardless of if they were brought into the store or mailed back.

Return fees aren’t new — many popular retailers have had policies in place for years.

Macy’s started their $9.99 return fees for non-Star Rewards members in 2023, a spokesperson for the company told NBC Chicago.

“Through our Macy’s Star Rewards program, members enjoy free shipped returns as part of their loyalty benefits,” the spokesperson added. “Customers can still return items to any Macy’s store free of charge.”

Before heading to the store, check the retailer’s website for details on their return policy to avoid being surprised by any fees.
