Pirates prospect Edward Florentino.

Over the last few years, the Pittsburgh Pirates have struggled to develop major league hitters. However, there are signs that the organization could be turning a corner after years of frustration. One prospect who is creating optimism is outfielder Edward Florentino.

During the 2025 campaign, the Dominican native split time between Rookie Ball and Low-A. He was a hitting machine with a .290 batting average in 83 games. The Pirates’ potential future star also hit 16 home runs and drove in 59 runs. Regardless of the level, Florentino made an impact every time he stepped to the plate.

While his bat cooled off a bit in Low-A, Florentino’s power still stood out. He hit 10 home runs in 54 games for the Bradenton Marauders, his most at any level. His success has not gone unnoticed by scouts across the league. Currently, Florentino is ranked as the Pirates’ fifth-best prospect by MLB.com.

Through 132 games in the minors, the 2024 International signee has posted a .280 batting average while driving in 87 runs. He has also showcased his power with 21 home runs, 33 doubles, and four triples. That is the type of hitter the Pirates have been in dire need of as they look to take advantage of a young pitching staff that is seen as one of the best in the majors.

Although Florentino is not projected to make his MLB debut until the 2029 campaign, he is a prospect who could have a major impact. The only Pirates position player ranked ahead of him is Konnor Griffin, the top prospect in baseball. With Griffin expected to make his MLB debut during the 2026 campaign and play an important role, Florentino could become the Pirates’ best hitting prospect before the end of next season.

Once the minor league season begins, Florentino will be a player to watch. He can change a game with one swing and is poised to do special things in a Pirates uniform if he continues to improve as he moves closer to calling PNC Park home.
