Family of Fort Worth teen search for answers after she was fatally shot Monday at the Historic Stop Six Park.
FORT WORTH, Texas — A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot Monday at a historic East Fort Worth park in an incident that left two people dead, according to Fort Worth police.
Cyanna Boone, who went by “CC,” was found shot to death at Stop Six Park in the 1500 block of Liberty Street. Police said she was among 15 to 20 young adults involved in an altercation that turned deadly.
“She had a future, and y’all stole it from her,” said Kharneeshia Wilson, Boone’s cousin. Wilson said she left behind two brothers.
Boone’s family said she was set to graduate in May from Dunbar High School with an associate’s degree.
Related Shooting on Handley Drive
East Division officers were working an unrelated disturbance call at 2:13 p.m. when they heard gunshots coming from the park, according to a police statement. Officers found Boone on the ground with gunshot wounds and pronounced her dead at the scene.
Five minutes later, at approximately 2:18 p.m., officers responded to a second shooting in the 1700 block of Handley Drive.
“That suspect vehicle fled or drove away from the park and ended up on Handley Drive,” said Daniel Segura, a Fort Worth police spokesman.
Officers found a parked vehicle with a young man inside suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he died shortly after. Another person who ran away was later found at a nearby residence and detained by police, according to the Fort Worth Police Department.
Investigation Ongoing
Detectives determined the two shootings are related. Police said the group had met at Stop Six Park and began arguing before a physical altercation broke out. An unknown suspect or suspects then began shooting.
“We’re talking to every single witness that remained on scene and we’re asking that if anyone left the scene right after the incident and we haven’t talked to them, please reach out to us because those specific details are very important,” Segura said.
Police said there are no known threats to the community at this time. Homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses and following leads to identify and arrest the suspect.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death and confirm the identity of the second victim.
Community Calls for Action
Teena James, who works with the local nonprofit Safe in the Six, challenged city leaders to do more.
“I’m challenging our mayor and our police chief to do better,” James said. “It takes a village, and I mean that.”
James, who works with youth to create a safer, healthier community, called on parents to take action if they know their children have access to guns.
“I’m calling for those who are aware your child has a gun, owns a gun, or has been around one. If you need help with your child getting counseling, therapy and or support please reach out to Safe in the Six,” she said.
Boone’s family said they have questions about why she was shot and whether she was targeted.
“Everyone involved needs to be held accountable for their actions,” Wilson said.
