Snow squall sweeps across Philadelphia region on New Year's Day

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — An early snow squall on New Year’s Day dumped a burst of snow onto the Philadelphia region causing slick roads and below freezing temperatures.

Quite a bit happened in Philadelphia before the first sunrise of the New Year.

The squall dumped a coating of snow onto the city in just a matter of minutes Thursday morning.

Flags along the Ben Franklin Parkway were whipping in the wind as the weather intensified.

Enough snow fell in some areas like Narberth for people to bring out snowblowers to clear sidewalks.

A large amount of the snow fell in just over an hour but then the weather cleared, making way for people to lace up and get in some exercise to kick off the new year.

“We are part of the Black Men Run Philadelphia and we do a New Year’s Day run every year,” said Sherman McLeod. “It’s not a resolution it’s a lifestyle for us.”

City crews were seen treating roads in a number of areas around the city.
