The Los Angeles Rams don’t typically sign defensive backs to multi-year extensions but Quentin Lake isn’t like most DBs. He’s an invaluable piece of the secondary and the Rams are rewarding him for becoming a standout playmaker.

On Thursday, the Rams announced they’ve signed Lake to a three-year contract extension. Lake was in the final year of his contract and was set to hit free agency in March but the Rams won’t let that happen.

He’s now signed through the 2028 season, as the Rams have locked up one of their top defenders – and one of the best nickel corners in football. Lake played every snap of the Rams’ first 16 games last season before the starters rested in Week 18, staying available for the team all year.

He was voted a captain for the second straight year in 2025 and has become an irreplaceable piece of the secondary since being a sixth-round pick in 2022 out of UCLA.

Lake has been on injured reserve since suffering an elbow injury in Week 11 and he’s been sorely missed on defense. His tackling, run defense and coverage skills make him the whole package as a defensive back, along with remarkable versatility that allows him to play all over the defense.

The terms of the contract haven’t yet been released but it was smart of the Rams to sign him before he could hit the open market in the offseason.

Lake is the second defender the Rams have signed during the 2025 season, with Nate Landman being the first. He signed a three-year, $22.5 million deal in November, and like Lake, was set to hit free agency in March.

Update (3:18 p.m. ET): Lake’s deal is worth $42 million with $25.7 million guaranteed, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
