AUBURN, Calif. — A record-breaking number of black bear cubs is currently in care at the Gold Country Wildlife Rescue in Auburn.
In just one week six orphaned black bear cubs arrived at the rescue – the most the facility has ever received in such a short span. The cubs, all around 5–6 months old and weighing just 12–17 pounds, were brought in by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife after losing their mothers to vehicle collisions or human encounters.
Now safely enrolled in the center’s long-term bear rehab program, “Summit University,” the cubs will spend the next 10 to 11 months preparing for release back into the wild. The group includes twin sets Rubicon and Tahoe from South Lake Tahoe and Lassen and Trinity from Redding, along with single cubs Shasta from Shasta County and Rollins from Placer County.
Though the rescue avoids naming most animals to preserve their wild instincts, exceptions are made for bear cubs due to their extended stays. Gold Country Wildlife Rescue is asking for public support to help cover the significant costs of raising and rehabilitating the cubs, including specialized diets, medical care and housing.
