JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville offense found a new life Saturday led by a new face. Behind a season-best night from senior Makiya Miller, the Dolphins scored 62 points in the final three quarters to win 72-59 over the Lipscomb Bisons Saturday afternoon.

Miller led the team with 21 points, one-shy of her career high. The Wright State transfer wasn’t the only standout performer on the day, though, as junior Bailey Burns and graduate student Priscilla Williams both scored in double figures.

“I challenged her to be better,” head coach Special Jennings said. “This is the response you hope for.”

The first quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to reach double figures in the opening frame. In the second quarter, though, Miller found her groove and took the Dolphins with her to the promised land.

She started by splashing home her first triple of the day, then Williams and Miller traded layups to push Jacksonville back in front, 19-17.

The shooting touch trickled throughout the team, with sophomore Mychal White drilling a 3-pointer. Miller closed out the quarter with her second long-range bucket of the night, putting JU up 34-25 at the break.

If the second quarter was an offensive storm, the third quarter was a raging typhoon of offensive execution.

Burns and Miller each hit 3-pointers as the Dolphins raced to a 10-3 run to open the quarter. After a Burns layup, Williams and Miller drilled back-to-back triples to put the Dolphins up 22 points midway through the period.

In all, Jacksonville outscored the Bisons 28-14 in the third quarter, taking a 62-39 lead into the final period of play.

The final period swung hard in favor of Lipscomb, but it was too little too late. Freshman Tatum Brown grabbed a contested offensive rebound through traffic and put in the layup, then on the next possession stole the ball and drove coast-to-coast for two more.

With the extra scoring punch at the end, the Dolphins were able to keep the Bisons at arms reach to close out the game.

Game Notes

  • The Dolphins won the rebounding battle, 38-27.
  • Miller is the fourth different Dolphins to score at least 20 points in a game this season, joining Williams, White and Brown.
  • Miller’s five 3-pointers were a season-high for a JU player this year, and three shy of the program record for 3-pointers in a single game.

Coach’s Comments
“We played the way we’re supposed to,” Jennings said. “We were ourselves, shared the basketball, ran in transition, got great looks at the basket and got to the free throw line. We played the way we’re supposed to today.”
