Inmate, 65, dies in JSO custody after contracting infectious disease during medical procedure

  • January 4, 2026

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man who was in the custody of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office died on Thursday after experiencing complications during a planned medical procedure, officials said.

According to JSO, Dominick Maccariella, 65, was admitted to UF Health on Dec. 17 for a planned medical procedure, but experienced complications and contracted an infectious disease.

Throughout his stay at the hospital, Maccariella’s health continued to deteriorate, and he died shortly after 10 p.m. on New Year’s Day, police said.

According to JSO, Maccariella was arrested in June 2025 and charged with aggravated assault and improper exhibition of a firearm or dangerous weapon.

He was sentenced and transferred from the Pre-Trial Detention Facility to JSO’s Community Transition Center to serve out the remainder of his sentence.

JSO said “all indications” are that Maccariella died of natural causes and no foul play is suspected.
