Kathy Hilton says the holidays are not only a time for celebration — but education.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 66, revealed to PEOPLE at QVC’s recent Holiday House pop-up in New York City that as a grandmother, she’s making sure to carry the family’s tradition of holiday charity work on to the next generation.
“It’s a tradition, and they’re also learning too,” Kathy shared. “We do several toy drives, and I did a big pajama party, which my daughter Nicky and I do every year. And we give a percentage of the pajamas to Children’s Hospital.”
However, Kathy noted that it’s not always easy, especially when it comes to teaching the newer additions to the family. She said she is still educating her daughter Paris‘ children, Phoenix and London, both 2, about giving back.

“We’ll be doing something for downtown for the mission, L.A. Mission, and we collect toys. And Paris’ two little ones came in the other day, and they [saw] all these unwrapped toys. They’re very polite, but they’re kind of going like, ‘Are these for us?’ ” she recalled.
“So I explained to them,” she continued. “I don’t think they understood, but [I said], ‘No, they’re not for you. These are for other children who are in the hospital or not as fortunate.’ “
The businesswoman went on to say that her grandchildren were “very well-behaved” and “didn’t touch” the toys after she told them what they were for, but said that the “teaching” moment was important as one day they will also help out.
“And then we go down — once they get a little older, we take them down with us, and we visit with the homeless,” Kathy said.
“It’s really heartwarming,” she continued of the event. “We set up for the children to come in and buy for the parents, and then we set up another room for the parents to come in and shop for the children. So we’re like elves [setting up gifts], and my girls, my boys, my husband, we love it.”

During the holidays, Kathy, her husband, Richard (Rick) Hilton, and their kids — Nicky, Paris, Barron and Conrad — often take part in multiple charities during the holidays to give back to the community. Last year, Kathy and DIRECTV partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities — which helps alleviate families’ financial burden amid their children’s healthcare journeys — to donate toys to families.

“It actually makes everybody feel good to be able to do something. During this time of year, we’re all very fortunate,” Kathy said at the time. “So it’s just a nice time to share, especially with the world, with everything going on. We have to celebrate the good times and make the best of every day.”
As for the fashion designer’s favorite part of the holidays, she previously shared that she often enjoys the moments when she’s got “my sweats on, my pajamas.”
