One of the city’s most prominent museums was recently named the best free attraction in Texas.
The Kimbell Art Museum claimed the state’s top spot in a report from CashNetUSA with an average Tripadvisor rating of 4.77. The online lender ranked free-entry attractions across the country based on publicly available Tripadvisor ratings, which allows users to rank experiences up to five stars.
Museum director Eric M. Lee said “all of us at the Kimbell” are thrilled with the honor and hope the recognition encourages more people to enjoy the museum.
The Kimbell’s permanent collection — which is on view for free — includes Michelangelo’s first painting, rare African masks and a Gentileschi painting not seen publicly for nearly 400 years. The museum has over 350 ancient American, European, Asian and Oceanic art pieces.
Designed by renowned architect Louis I. Kahn, the Kimbell opened to the public on Oct. 4, 1972. It is owned and operated by the Kimbell Art Foundation, established in 1936 by art collectors Kay and Velma Kimbell.
The museum curates special exhibitions that require tickets. The current special exhibition, “Myth and Marble,” features a rare display of ancient Roman sculptures carved between the fifth century B.C. and the early fourth century.
“Myth and Marble” will open free to the public during the museum’s Family Festival on Jan. 11. The artifacts are on view through Jan. 25.

In March, the museum will shine light on more than 60 silver, gold and bejeweled objects gifted to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The church — built on what is believed to be the site of Jesus of Nazareth’s death, burial and resurrection — has been a site of Christian devotion for nearly two thousand years.
The Kimbell then will celebrate the art of photography for the first time with an October exhibition spotlighting some of the earliest preserved photographs from the 1840s.
