A suspect is wanted after allegedly trying to steal a package off of a home’s porch and then fleeing from the homeowner and police leading to shots being fired over the weekend, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

This all unfolded on Jan. 4 around 5:30 p.m. when officers were called to control a crowd where it was reported that someone had a weapon on the 400 block of D Street in the Feltonville neighborhood of Philadelphia, police said.

According to officials, a 50-year-old homeowner was watching his home security cameras on the 400 block of East Rockland Street when he saw someone trying to take a package off of his front porch.

The homeowner walked out with a handgun and confronted the attempted thief, police said.

Officials explained that the homeowner pointed his weapon at the ground and fired it one time which caused the suspect to run away before firing his own weapon at the homeowner several times.

While police were responding to the crowd nearby, they heard the gunshots and ran toward Rockland Street, officials said.

Two of the officers found the suspect running away who allegedly fired his gun toward them, police reported. In response, one of the officers fired his weapon at the suspect.

Police said that the suspect was able to get away but investigators found a .40 caliber handgun and jacket that they think belonged to him.

The suspect is described as being of stocky build with a possible goatee and was last seen wearing a brown coat, black pants and light grey sneakers.

The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative duty.
