Kevin Colgan
OBITUARY
Kevin C. Colgan, 73, passed away Christmas morning at home in La Jolla where he had been living with his daughter Flavia Colgan and son-in-law Dr. James Mangan, and undergoing medical treatments for the illness that ultimately took his life. Kevin loved the peace, tranquility, and beautiful nature that he encountered in La Jolla, loved all the antique cars that he could spot on the streets, and he enjoyed the friendly nature of the people he encountered and was warmly welcomed. Kevin was incredibly appreciative of the attentive care he received from the doctors and nurses at UC San Diego Health.
He is survived by his daughters Flavia and Kelsey and son Breandan.
Colgan was born in North Philadelphia in 1952 and graduated from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He was an oarsman at St. Joe’s and went on to win a number of national championships.
Kevin went on to a 30-year teaching career in the School District of Philadelphia, where he made a deep impact on the lives of thousands of students. Colgan was also a beloved principal at the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, where he completed his master’s degree in Vedic Science at Maharishi International University.
Throughout his life, Kevin’s deepest passion was that of being a father. He loved watching his son Breandan play hockey and could often be seen cheering in the stands at Breandan’s games. Daughter Flavia Colgan remembers her Dad: “My Dad was a truly unique, loving, thoughtful, caring man whose charismatic, charming, and laid back demeanor belied a man whose waters ran very deep. I am so proud to be his daughter. The strength, resilience, grace, and humor with which he took on his 2 1/2 year battle with cancer left me inspired and awestruck. Being his caregiver and helping to walk him home was one of the greatest honors of my life. His spirit will live on in my heart and in the hearts of all those he touched.”
