PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Officials say a woman was killed in a fire inside a row home in Philadelphia’s Ogontz neighborhood.
It happened around 4:45 a.m. on Thursday on the 6200 block of Ogontz Avenue, near Godfrey Avenue.
Firefighters say they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home when they arrived.
Inside, they found the woman, believed to be in her 60s, unresponsive on the first floor. She was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.
A neighbor who saw the flames says the quick work of firefighters helped stop it from spreading down the block.
“Those guys were outstanding. I thought it would catch the other house adjoining, and they saved those houses, so that was a blessing,” said Jerry Adams. “But it was so sad to hear that my older neighbor across the street passed away. She was a real nice lady. I spoke to her often, and just to see something like that happen is tragic.”
Officials say the fire damaged at least one other home.
The identity of the woman has not yet been released.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
