The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for January, and some jobs pay more than others.

The application period for exams opened Jan. 7.

Exam applications currently open include: accountant; associate inspector (housing construction); correction officer; education officer; electrical engineer; electrician (CUNY); housing exterminator; legal coordinator; nutrition consultant; police officer; school safety agent; and watershed maintainer.

The starting salary for each career varies, according to the city.

Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers.

Most of these exams have a deadline of Jan. 27.

The exam for police officer is open until Jan. 15, the exam for correction officer is open until March 4, and the exam for school safety agent is open until Feb. 3.

Accountant

Salary: $58,357

Job description: Accountants, under supervision, perform professional accounting work of moderate difficulty and responsibility internally in City agencies or in conducting field audits and investigations; work independently or with others in executing responsible accounting assignments following prescribed rules of procedure. All Accountants perform related work.

Associate inspector (housing construction)

Salary: $70,898

Job description: Associate Inspectors (Housing Construction), under general supervision, perform supervisory work in the inspection of the construction, repair and alteration of public housing for the conformance to plans and specifications. They assign, review, and evaluate work of Inspectors (Housing Construction) and Apprentice Inspectors (Housing Construction); instruct newly assigned Inspectors (Housing Construction) and Apprentice Inspectors (Housing Construction) in their duties; assist and advise subordinate inspectors in difficult problems and resolve disagreements between inspectors and contractors or property owners; follow up all violations and unsafe conditions reported by inspectors; investigate complaints of adverse inspection reports; interview contractors and property owners to explain appropriate and pertinent laws, rules and regulations as they apply to the construction, alternation and repair of public housing as described herein; and maintain records and prepare reports. Correction officer

Job description: Correction Officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care, custody, control, job training and work performance of sentenced and detained inmates within New York City correctional facilities. They supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities; inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security; conduct searches in order to detect contraband; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate log books; communicate with other area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information; issue verbal orders, announcements and explanations to inmates; observe inmates and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals; safeguard Department supplies and equipment; escort inmates within and outside of the facility including their transportation in Departmental vehicles; respond to unusual incidents and disturbances; enforce security procedures in accordance with Department guidelines; request medical assistance for inmates when necessary; count and verify the number of inmates present in assigned areas; verify identification of inmates; supervise inmates of either sex; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Education officer

Salary: $64,313

Job description: Education Officers perform professional and/or supervisory work of various levels of responsibility in the planning and development of a program of the City School District of New York in one or more of the following areas: special education, career and occupational education, health, immunization, diagnostic and treatment services for parents and children, and liaison services with appropriate community agencies to assist pupils in adjusting to the school environment. Electrical engineer

Electrician (CUNY)

Salary: $68.71 per hour for a 35-hour work week.

Job description: Electricians (CUNY), under direction, perform work on the installation, repair and maintenance of high or low tension electrical systems for light, heat, power and communications in or on buildings, and structures. They install, repair, replace and maintain electric wiring systems and components, equipment and apparatus in or on buildings and structures in accordance with the New York City Electrical Code, pertinent plans, specifications and job orders; install, repair, replace, and maintain electric wiring and equipment, and controllers; install conduits, raceways and electrical conductors; conduct tests on existing installations to determine faults and make necessary repairs; when assigned to a position requiring a Special Electrician License, obtain permits for electrical work to be performed; conduct and/or witness tests on electrical wiring systems, equipment and/or appliances; prepare applications, reports, notices and other documents; prepare required sketches, drawings and layouts; keep job and other records; in the temporary absence of the supervisor, may perform the duties of that position; supervise assigned personnel; and may drive motor vehicles. Housing exterminator

Salary: $38,998

Legal coordinator

Salary: $55,105

Nutrition consultant

Salary: $72,038

Police officer

School safety agent
