Marinara Pizza coming to Sushi of Gari building
I have not been able to contact the company directly, but with a tip and some of the usual good digging by James Bogardus, we now know that a branch of Marinara Pizza is coming to the Sushi of Gari taxpayer on the northwest corner of West Broadway and Duane. (Thanks to A. for the most recent pics. I love that pic I took below, in 2022.)
130 West Broadway, aka 53 Duane was sold late last year by ASG Equities, the family office of the Gindis who own Century 21 and many buildings in the neighborhood. The corner two-story building is a 25-foot square. Sushi of Gari closed in 2024 after 12 years on the corner. Bouley Studio was there before that.
James noted that the LLC and deed information point to Gabriel Weiser of Roslyn, NY, who is one of the owners of Marinara Pizza.
According to the Long Island Press, Weisner, 36 or so, owns seven Marinara Pizza locations — six in the city (mostly Upper East and Upper West) and the newest in Roslyn. The first was founded in 2012.
“In the same way that Weiser believed New York City needed some new life among its pizzerias, he thought the same thing about Roslyn,” the story said. “Weiser noticed an empty storefront across from his neighborhood on his drives into work every day and decided that Roslyn would be home to the next Marinara Pizza. It turns out it was a good decision, as Weiser says business is booming.”
Barstool Sports did their usual One Bite review in 2019 with special guest Jerry Springer (!) (who died in 2023) and the pair called it “very New York.” Springer, who grew up in Kew Gardens, gave it an 8.7 and Dave Portnoy gave it a 7.4, which for him is pretty high.
