Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Secretary-Treasurer William Sproule released the following statement on the psssing of former Gov, Richard J. Codey:
The Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters mourns the passing of Richard Codey—former Governor, State Senator, and a steadfast public servant whose life was defined by integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the people of New Jersey. Richard Codey led not for recognition, but out of a genuine sense of duty. In every role he held, he brought decency, steadiness, and a deep respect for the institutions and communities he served. His leadership style reminded us that government works best when it is grounded in honesty, compassion, and accountability.
Above all else, Richard Codey was a family man. He spoke often and proudly of his love for his family, and that devotion shaped the values he carried into public life—loyalty, respect, and an understanding that the decisions made in Trenton ultimately affect families at kitchen tables across our state. His fierce loyalty to New Jersey was evident in every chapter of his career. He never forgot where he came from, and he never stopped fighting for the state he loved.
Richard Codey was also a true friend to working people and to organized labor. He understood that strong unions and good-paying, union jobs are essential to building and sustaining a strong middle class. Time and again, he stood with working men and women, supporting policies that protected dignity on the job, strengthened workplace safety, and ensured that economic progress was shared by those who do the work. The Carpenters of the Eastern Atlantic States will always be grateful for his partnership, his courage, and his constancy.
New Jersey has lost a principled leader and a good man. His legacy will endure in the lives he improved, the workers he championed, and the example he set for public service. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Richard Codey will be remembered with respect, gratitude, and affection.I’m
