“In addition to the crime plan, we’re going after all those individuals with felony warrants,” said Chief Daniel Comeaux.

DALLAS, Texas — Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux and his command staff updated the Dallas City Council Public Safety Committee on the city’s progress in reducing violent crime and the department’s current staffing levels during a meeting on Monday.

During the presentation, Comeaux shared data showing that violent crime in Dallas is down so far in 2025 compared to the same time last year. The reductions include crimes such as murder, robbery, and aggravated assault.

Comeaux also said incidents of random gunfire across the city, including celebratory gunfire like what Dallas experienced on New Year’s Eve, are down more than 10% compared to last year.

The chief said fewer violent incidents have also led to a decrease in the number of victims year over year, adding that proactive policing strategies and warrant enforcement remain a major focus for the department.

“In addition to the crime plan, we’re going after all those individuals with felony warrants. We are one of the most proactive police departments in the United States, and we’re being very proactively going after bad people,” Chief Daniel Comeaux said.

Comeaux told council members that officer recruitment is also playing a key role in the department’s crime reduction efforts, saying interest in joining DPD remains strong nationwide.

“Our recruiting is going extremely well. People want to be a Dallas police officer. We’re known across the United States for our police department. When people think of Texas, when it comes to law enforcement, they think of the Dallas Police Department,” Comeaux said.

According to the department, Dallas Police currently have 3,286 sworn officers. Officials said 50 recruits have already been selected for the next academy class, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Comeaux and Dallas PD have a goal of reaching 4000 sworn officers.
