Jersey City has landed $1 million in federal funding to build the Bayside Community Center.
The center will be the first of six planned recreation facilities set to expand across the city’s neighborhoods, according to a news statement issued Thursday by the city.
State Sen. Angela McKnight secured the American Rescue Plan grant for the facility, which will be located within Bayside Park in the Greenville section.
The project advances a 2024 city ordinance calling for recreation centers in each ward.
The new community centers will include flexible spaces for youth programs, fitness and wellness activities, educational workshops, cultural programs and community-based services for all residents.
The multi-purpose hub will be designed with direct community input to reflect local priorities.
Additional public meetings are scheduled for 2026 to seek feedback from residents before construction begins.
