HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Outbound lanes of the Katy Freeway near the Heights area reopened early Tuesday following a deadly crash that took place on Monday night.

The Houston Police Department said a driver in a Toyota Corolla was stalled on the main lanes of the freeway near Taylor Street when they were struck from behind by a wrecker truck that was headed to a different scene.

The driver of the Corolla did have their flashers on while on the side of the road, HPD said.

Officials said the wrecker driver did have another passenger in the truck and did not exhibit any signs of intoxication.

HPD said the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts at CPR.

Sergeant Dallas with HPD said the wrecker’s driver and the passenger remained at the scene.

“We are looking into speed and other factors of this accident,” Dallas said. HPD said charges are still possible pending the outcome of an investigation.
