Macy’s has announced it’s closing down 14 stores, including it’s La Mesa location at Grossmont Center, which is the longest operating Macy’s store in San Diego County.
The company says changing shopping habits and declining in store sales drove the decision. The local closure is part of a move to shut 150 under performing stores over a three year period.Last year the retailer closed 66 stores across the country.
The La Mesa location welcomed its first customers in 1961, the same year Grossmont Center mall was opened. The company has not given an official date when the store will close.Once it does, Macy’s will have seven locations across San Diego County, including Westfield UTC, Plaza Bonita and Fashion Valley.
