A Houston congressional district has been without representation for nearly a year. Now, the runoff election is approaching.
HOUSTON — Voters in Houston’s 18th Congressional District will soon choose their new representative in a runoff election between former Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee and former Houston City Councilmember Amanda Edwards. The district has been without representation since the death of Sylvester Turner in March of last year.
Edwards raised concerns Friday about voter confusion surrounding the runoff, citing the redistricting battle and the unusual timing of the election. The special election to fill the seat took place last year, but the runoff is scheduled for this year.
“Now you have a situation where people aren’t talking about it, they’re confused by it, and they don’t even know where to start or begin because again, no one is expecting a runoff election in January of 2026 for an election that happened back in November of 2025,” Edwards said.
Early voting begins next week, on Jan. 21, with election day set for Jan. 31.
Voters will need to return to the polls again just over a month later for the March 3 primary for the next full term.
Edwards and others are urging residents of the 18th District to stay informed and make sure to vote in the upcoming runoff.
