Large police presence temporarily shuts down part of I-17 in north Phoenix

  • January 18, 2026

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Part of a busy Phoenix-area freeway was shut down for a couple of hours Saturday night due to unknown police activity.

Details are extremely limited.

Around 7 p.m. on Saturday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said they were investigating a crash with minor injuries.

Because of the crash, the northbound lanes of Interstate 17 near Pinnacle Peak Road were shut down. They fully reopened around 9:15 p.m.

DPS said there was an incident that began off the freeway, which resulted in the crash happening on I-17. It is unclear what that incident was, but it has prompted a large police presence at the scene of the crash.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
