A former San Diego police officer who pleaded guilty to taking funds from a police program dedicated to school safety and using the money on personal expenses was sentenced in San Diego Superior Court Friday to two years of probation.
Prosecutors said Curtis Doll, 42, took around $4,000 from the department’s School Safety Patrol Program, a crossing guard program aimed at helping elementary school students safely cross the street at uncontrolled intersections near schools throughout the city.
Doll then used the funds on a variety of personal purchases, such as clothing and car tires, among other items that were bought with money taken from a bank account used to fund the program, prosecutors said.
A criminal complaint alleged the money was taken between 2022 and 2024. Doll was charged in 2024.
Doll pleaded guilty to a felony count of fraudulent appropriation by a public officer, but per his plea agreement, the charge can be reduced to a misdemeanor after 18 months with full payment of $2,776.89 in restitution to the city of San Diego.
