Man drowns in lake off New Berlin Road while trying to retrieve phone: JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man drowned in a lake on New Berlin Road Tuesday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO said the man, believed to be in his early 20s, was trying to retrieve his phone, which had dropped into the lake at William Sheffield Park, when he fell into the water around 3 p.m.

JSO crews responded to the scene and tried to rescue the man. He was taken to the hospital, but died.

The man was with another person at the time of the incident, but JSO did not release their relationship.

JSO said there were no signs of foul play as the incident appeared to be accidental.
