A “series of collisions” on Roosevelt Boulevard left one man dead and another in extremely critical condition early Friday morning, police said.
According to police, around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, January 30, officers responded to several reports of a crash on the southbound Roosevelt Boulevard at Wingohocking Street.
Police said the investigation revealed that the incident started in the northbound lanes, where a 55-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were involved in a separate accident that left their vehicles disabled.
As additional vehicles began striking the disabled cars in the northbound lanes, both men leaped over the concrete median into the southbound lanes to avoid further injury, according to police.
Upon entering the southbound side, police said they were struck by a silver Toyota driven by a 21-year-old man.
When medics arrived on scene, they pronounced the 55-year-old man dead at 3:38 a.m, police said. The 31-year-old man was transported to a nearby hospital with multiple injuries and is currently listed in extremely critical condition.
Police also shared that the driver of the Toyota remained at the scene, contacted 911, and is cooperating with investigators.
The investigation remains active and ongoing with the Philadelphia Police Crash Investigation Division, police shared.
A portion of the boulevard was closed as police investigate. A lot of snow and ice could be seen on the roadway at the incident.
