Mother of five dies under downtown Houston bridge during freezing temperatures

  • January 31, 2026

HOUSTON – The daughter of woman who was found dead Monday evening under a bridge near Daikin Park, said she tried to convince her mother to stay with her.

The body of Alicia Harnishfeger was found under a bridge near Congress and Hamilton in downtown Houston.

Harnishfeger was a mother of five who struggled with both mental health issues and substance abuse according to her daughter, Bianca Barajas.

Barajas, 17, fought back tears as she described how she urged her mother to stay with her in warm home just before the frigid temperatures hit, but her mother declined the offer.

“Some people do have homes, they just refuse the services and she was a very sweet, kind, loving person. And I just, if there’s another freeze coming up this weekend I would like everyone to know to protect their families whether they’re homeless or not,” Barajas said.

Harnishfeger’s cause of death was still pending Friday.

Barajas said that her family could use some help with burial expenses.

They have set up a “GoFundMe” account for those interested in helping the family.
