PHOENIX (AZFamily) — New court documents are shedding light on what led up to a shooting in southwest Phoenix in which a man who called for help was killed by police.
The incident unfolded Monday night on lower Buckeye Road and 75th Avenue when Edgar Ledesma Garcia, 31, arrived at a home where 10 people were gathered.
According to court records, Garcia believed someone wanted him dead, though the documents do not specify who. The family living in the home knew Garcia and says he had struggled with mental health problems.
Garcia pulled up to the home in his truck and had a verbal argument with Christian Diaz, identified as the father of the household.
Garcia grabbed a shotgun from his truck and fired multiple rounds at the house, attempting to blast out the front door. When the door didn’t budge, Garcia retrieved two additional guns and fired approximately 20 more rounds.
One of those rounds struck someone inside the home, though that person is expected to recover. Garcia then forced his way in through the back of the house
Once inside, Diaz tackled Garcia to the ground.
Witnesses told Arizona’s Family that Diaz managed to hold Garcia down while simultaneously calling police.
Family members say they told arriving police officers that the gunman was being restrained inside the home.
Court records indicate that officers could see Garcia being held on the ground by Diaz when an officer fired one shot, striking Diaz in the face. Diaz died at the scene.
Although Garcia did not fire the shot that killed Diaz, he is being charged with his murder.
Arizona’s Family is continuing to work with police to obtain additional details about the officer who fired the fatal shot.
