Tracking a cold weather advisory ahead of a hard freeze watch in Houston

  • January 31, 2026

Today’s Forecast:

We started our morning with a cold weather advisory, now the focus is our afternoon high in the 40s with wind gusts up to 20 mph that will make it feel colder than our actual temperatures. This will keep things blustery, especially in the morning, but winds will calm down by early evening.

Saturday night into Sunday morning brings the hard freeze watch. Actual temperatures are forecast to dip into the teens and lower 20s. A freeze watch starts tonight at 9 and stays that way until Sunday 9 am.

The below temperatures are actual temps, not wind chills. By Sunday afternoon, the wind will lighten and you can expect a lot more sunshine. While it will still feel chilly, highs will climb to the 50s, making it a far better option for outdoor activities.

However, experts say that you want to avoid using the wrong items to protect your home – like newspapers, towels and blankets. “So if you wrap with newspapers or bath towels or blankets, it sounds like a good idea but they hold moisture and if they hold more moisture then they freeze and then now you’ve got a frozen thing on top of the thing you’re trying to protect, right.” Joe Bany from John Moore Services told the weather team.Preparing your home for cold weather (Copyright 2025 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)Warming up next week:

Sunday afternoon we rebound nicely, with sunshine and highs back into the 50s. Looking ahead to next week: rain returns, but so do the 60s.

Forecast HighsYour Extended Forecast:

As for next week, rain is possible late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Temperatures are forecast to warm back up too, with highs approaching the 70s just in time for Super Bowl Sunday. Stay warm this weekend
