JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville men’s basketball team fell to visiting FGCU Saturday afternoon, 68-49, to end JU’s two-game home winning streak.
Saturday’s loss moved Jacksonville to 9-14 and 4-6 overall in conference. The loss also served as the program’s eighth straight to the Eagles.
Freshman guard Hayden Wood led the Dolphins in scoring with 11 points. It was his second straight double-digit effort and sixth of conference play. Wood also posted a team-high two blocks which was his fifth of the season, all in ASUN competition.
Fellow freshman Evan Sterck was second in scoring with eight points. Wood grabbed six rebounds with Sterck right behind with four.
Jacksonville led for a majority of the first half before a late FGCU bucket gave the Eagles a 25-24 halftime lead. JU’s 24-point half was its second lowest scoring half of the ASUN slate thus far.
The ‘Phins followed that half up with just a 25-point effort. Jacksonville took the lead from FGCU which held for a possession before the Eagles retook it, which lasted for the duration of the afternoon.
Jacksonville won the battle of the boards by one, 38-37. Forward Jaylen Jordon snagged eight boards, a game-high.
The overall game for Jacksonville was hurt by a 16-turnover afternoon and going just 1-17 from beyond the arc. The team’s 3-point shooting was its worst performance of the season. Jacksonville’s 49 points were also its lowest in a game this season.
JU’s homestand ended Saturday, as the team hits the road for three straight games. Jacksonville visits Queens for a rematch on Thursday, Feb. 5 before another rematch with UWG on Saturday, Feb. 7. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+ and on radio through 1010XL/92.5 FM.
