LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will deliver what her office calls a State of the City address Monday, and she’s expected to highlight how the city is preparing for the world stage with major sporting events happening over the next few years.

Bass will give the speech at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 3 p.m.

Traditionally, the State of the City address comes in April, as the city’s budget process begins. But Monday, Bass is expected to highlight the city’s preparations as the L.A. area’s big events draw nearer — starting with eight World Cup games set to be played at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium in June and July. The city will also host the 2027 Super Bowl and 2028 Olympics.

“It’s my goal that when the world comes to Los Angeles, they will see the best of our city. Not just the stadium, but they will see the culture, the history and the art embedded into the Coliseum and Exposition Park.”

Bass is also expected to give a second, more traditional State of the City address in mid-April. Los Angeles mayors typically give their State of the City address in the spring to detail their priorities, tout accomplishments and discuss the release of the city’s budget for the next fiscal year.

Some, however, are questioning the intent behind Bass’ speech.

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, L.A. mayors usually only deliver one address. Monday’s speech coincides with the first date L.A. mayoral candidates can file paperwork with the City Clerk to run for office.

Despite criticism over her handling of the 2025 January wildfires, Bass may highlight in her speech how the city has recorded a 60-year low in homicides last year, and also a drop in the amount of people facing homelessness.
