Police went to the ends of the Earth — or, at least the end of the beach — to take a driver into custody after a brief chase in Huntington Beach.

The chase began at about 10 p.m. Sunday when an officer tried to pull over a driver for a traffic violation, then learned the car was stolen. The chased ended up on Pacific Coast Highway, where officers deployed spike strips that damaged the car’s tires.

After a PIT maneuver, a passenger was taken into custody, but the driver ran toward the beach and into the ocean. Video from the police department’s helicopter captured the unusual pursuit as the damp driver was taken into custody.
