Update:
1 a.m., Feb. 3, 2026: Updated to add new details about the shooting incident from the Dallas police chief.
Two people were hurt, one of them critically, when two Dallas police officers exchanged gunfire Monday night with an armed gunman inside the bathroom of a Red Bird-area apartment complex, authorities said during a late night news conference.
Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said one of the bullets struck the bulletproof vest of his officer, who was listed in stable condition after being taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“He’s fine,” the chief said at the scene. “Right now he’s en route to the hospital to get further checked out, but it appears that he’s fine.”
Police did not immediately identify the officer who was struck by gunfire or elaborate on the extent of the officer’s condition. The department initially said in a social media post that none of its officers had been hurt during the response but Comeaux updated that information during an onsite news conference.

Comeaux said the man and woman who also suffered gunshot wounds were listed in critical and stable condition. Police did not immediately identify the pair.
According to investigators, the incident began when police were called to Mill House Apartments, located in the 4300 block of Woodhollow Drive in the Red Bird area, around 8:40 p.m.
The arriving officers were told that a man with a gun was inside a bathroom in one of the apartments. Police later found that a woman was also inside the bathroom with the man, Comeaux said.
He said his officers entered the bathroom and shots were fired. Two DPD officers fired their weapons at the suspect, who returned fire, Comeaux said.
The two civilians are believed to be related although police did not immediately identify the nature of their relationship.
The incident resulted in a large police presence at the complex, which is located near the Dallas Executive Airport.
Several residents and visitors at the scene came out of their units to see what was going on as a result of the commotion in the parking lot.
Around 10:20 p.m., Dallas police officers stood huddled behind a section of yellow crime scene tape that had been placed in the apartment parking lot.
About seven police cars and a department van were parked near the crime scene tape as people stood on their apartment balconies and porches to look at what was happening.
