NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City officials are encouraging residents to dig out their cars from the snow as they announced Alternate Side Parking rules will remain suspended through Sunday.
NYC Emergency Management advised New Yorkers on Tuesday to take advantage of the milder weather to dig out cars and clear snow and ice before the next bitter blast arrives this weekend.
Last week’s snowstorm has left a longer impression than most because of the days of frigid temperatures that followed.
Eyewitness News saw New Yorkers doing what they could on Tuesday. One man was digging a path for sanitation workers to get to his garbage. Another was clearing snow from a hydrant.
Cobble Hill resident Alan Grotheer was starting to address the icy mounds encasing his car.
“I came about three days ago and it was a rock and I said ‘no, it’s going to stay a while,'” Grotheer said.
And lucky for him, the city just suspended Alternate Side Parking rules for five more days.
The extension comes perhaps after officials realized just how challenging it is to remove snow during a deep freeze.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said New York’s Strongest is continuing their efforts.
“They have now cleared over 52,000 crosswalks, over 11,000 fire hydrants and more than 17,000 bus stops,” Mamdani said. “Operations continue around the clock. They have melted more than 150 million pounds of snow across our five boroughs and laid more than 200 million pounds of salt.”
But as bitter cold is set to return, that work will become more challenging yet again.
